Ausprobieren, ich bin bekanntermassen kein Mica-Verfechter....

Just for the fun of it and due to the simplicity and low parts count
of the circuit, I decided to give this a try. I used Thorsten's
circuit, with raised ps voltage (36 V). Construction was fast and
easy, made p2p on a pair of RS tagboards. Parts used in the project
was nothing special: generic 1% metal film resistors and film and
foil polypropylene capacitors all over.
At first, I powered it from a bench PS, but the noise was terribly
high, so I changed this to a quartet of PP3 batteries and it was
really dead quiet.
Now, what about the sound? I was amazed by the outcome. Without any
break-in, to my surprise, the sound was very-very good. It was not as
good as my current FVP5 (Allen Wright's), but very close. Maybe, with
better parts...
What is most evident is a little lack in bass, there seems to drop a
little in the lowest octaves. Is there an adjustment I could make to
fix the bass?

Excessive PSU Impedance, for fun stick a 10,000uF Capacitor in
parallel with the batteries and the bass will be back. Then upgrade to
6AH or bigger SLA Batteries and low resiatnce wiring and change the
cap to 22uF MKP.
