Hi,
1. "I own a pair of Tannoy System DMT15 MKII studio monitors. It's a fantastic loudspeaker.
However, it was not a "great" match with the single ended monoblocks that I owned at the time I purchased the Tannoy monitors.
At that time I had a pair of Wright 3.5 (2a3) monoblocks, with 3.5 wpc rms and about 8 wpc instantaneous music power (remember that description?). They were much "better" amps, overall, than the Cary 300B single ended monobocks that I owned just prior to the Wrights -- faster, much better bass, more coherent, greater extension, etc. The Wright 3.5 monoblocks worked wonderfully with Reference 3a Royal Master Control loudspeakers...with a "mere" 91 db efficiency. But those speakers had no crossover, flattish impedance, and an 8" driver to push around. When matched with the Tannoy monitors, there was a definite "slowing" and PRAT was lost, even thought they would play much "louder" in an absolute sense. Those little amps just couldn't drive the big Tannoys with authority.
I have written about this other times on this forum, and I suspect it's a combination of the crossover and the large 15 inch "piston" that has to be driven. So while they are very efficient at 98db at 1 watt at 1 meter, in my opinion (and experience) little single ended amps just won't cut it with the big Tannoys. I would have little confidence that a single ended 45 amp will work effectively.
In contrast, I HAVE driven the Tannoy's very successfully with a SunAudio SV300B MKII (20 wpc / PP), and a custom made triode strapped zero feedback, 6V6GT dual mono amp (5 wpc / PP). So it's not just the measured amount of power that's important...it also relates to a topology that has the ability to effectively drive the loudspeaker motor.
Others may be able to better articulate the above impression."
2. " You are right and I didn't understand he wants use 45's in single-ended amp. But with 25w push-pull Tannoys are absolutely great and it's the amp I use with them."
